At times, the fortunes of this city of 375,000 have been linked to the financial ups and downs of The Oakland Tribune, a 119-year-old daily.
In the summer of 1991, the city was already bruised by the damage of the 1989 earthquake and the financial wounds of a struggling local economy; later that year, a fire would consume entire neighborhoods in the city's hills. The Tribune, meanwhile, had became so burdened by debt that its doom seemed near, and civic and church leaders rallied subscribers and investors so that Oakland would not be known as the largest city in America without its own paper.
Criticism of Coverage
But the relations between this city, whose population is predominantly black, and the newspaper have cooled in the last 10 months, ever since the newspaper changed hands. Robert C. Maynard, the prominent black journalist who ran the paper with his wife, Nancy, sold The Tribune to the Alameda Newspaper Group, part of the Houston-based Media News Group, which operates The Houston Post, The Denver Post and other newspapers. (Mr. Maynard died in August.)

SUN MICROSYSTEMS TO SELL MICROPROCESSORS DIRECTLY

Sun Microsystems Inc. said yesterday that it would directly sell the microprocessors that power its work stations. In the last 11 years, Sun, the biggest work station company, has developed a series of microprocessors that run in the advanced Unix computer environment using RISC, or reduced instruction set computing, technology. Up to now, these chips have been sold through licensed semiconductor companies. Sun's plan to sell such microprocessors directly to other competing computer and electronics companies comes as leading chip makers introduce more RISC products.

MILWAUKEE MANUFACTURER TO BUY KOLLER INDUSTRIES

Jason Inc. of Milwaukee, a manufacturer of automotive trim, finishing and power-generation products, agreed yesterday to acquire Koller Industries for $55 million in cash. It would be the 11th acquisition by Jason in the last seven years. Koller Industries, which consists of the Koller Manufacturing Company in Milwaukee, Metalex in Libertyville, Ill., and Advanced Wire Products in Addison, Ill., makes precision stamped metal products.

CHEVRON PUTS SOME ASPHALT OPERATIONS UP FOR SALE

The Chevron Corporation said yesterday that it was seeking to sell its asphalt businesses in the Pacific Northwest, including two refineries, and six terminal sites nationwide. Chevron, the nation's largest petroleum refiner and gasoline maker, said it wanted to sell its plant in Portland, Ore., and its refinery near Seattle. It wants to get another party to operate its asphalt plant in Perth Amboy, N.J. About 210 people work for the asphalt unit. Chevron's asphalt business has annual sales of $250 million, but in 1992 it represented less than 1 percent of the company's $37 billion in revenue.

CYPRUS AND LAC WIN BID TO BUY STAKE IN CHILEAN MINE

The Cyprus Minerals Company of Englewood, Colo., and LAC Minerals Ltd. of Toronto beat out eight competitors for the right to buy a 51 percent stake in El Abra copper mine in Chile, the largest foreign investment project in the country's history. Cyprus and LAC agreed to pay $404 million, plus $151 million in costs attributed to Codelco, Chile's state-owned copper company, which owns the mine.

The Bancfirst Corporation said last week that it had agreed to acquire First City Bank of Tulsa, Okla., which has $40 million in assets and is owned by First Bancshares of Muskogee Inc. Under the agreement, Bankfirst, the third-largest bank holding company in Oklahoma, with assets of $744 million, will offer an undisclosed amount of cash for First City. The transaction is subject to due diligence, and regulator and shareholder approval.

Lilly to Cut 4,000 in Wide Revamping

The pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Company announced a broad restructuring today to lower costs that includes cutting 4,000 employees from its work force.
The cuts are part of the plans of Lilly's chairman, Randall L. Tobias, to restore the financial performance of the Indianapolis-based company. Mr. Tobias, a former vice chairman at the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, came to Lilly last June after Lilly's board dismissed the chief executive, Vaughn D. Bryson.
