Blocked by the nation's leaders from bringing news to China, the world's largest potential media market, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation is exploring ways to cooperate with Chinese partners on advanced information technology. Last week, the News Corporation announced a deal with The People's Daily, run by the Communist Party's Central Committee, to invest jointly $5.4 million in an information and technology business -- a deal that seems more of a door opener than a money maker.

The latest big news is that "the U.S. imperialist war-maniacs" and the "South Korean puppets" are engaging in military maneuvers and plotting to attack North Korea, again. The last time this happened was the Korean War, a "criminal war against Korea started by the United States," and America is now "shamelessly" planning a Korean War memorial. This is "a foolish attempt to justify its provocation of the war of aggression and its murder of people."

Newark Case Is Keeping Mexico Rapt

It has not quite rivaled the O. J. Simpson trial for courtroom drama, but after only a few days the extradition case in New Jersey of a former Mexican prosecutor has created a media frenzy of its own on Mexico's side of the border. Newspapers here gasped at the attempt -- unsuccessful -- by lawyers for the defendant, Mario Ruiz Massieu, to subpoena former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. The lawyers wanted the former President to testify about the political murder investigation that Mr. Ruiz Massieu is accused of covering up during the Salinas administration.

APPLAUSE AND DAKIN TOY MAKERS TO MERGE

Applause Inc. and Dakin Inc., two closely held toy makers, agreed yesterday to merge in anticipation of a public offering to take place early next year. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but a spokesman said the merger will be through an exchange of stock. The new company, called Applause Enterprises Inc., will have revenue of more than $150 million in 1995. The new company is expected to be taken public as early as January.

LESLIE FAY WILL NOT SELL ITS CORE BUSINESSES

The Leslie Fay Companies has abandoned efforts to find a buyer for its core businesses, saying it plans to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as an independent entity. The apparel company, which is based in New York, declined to comment on why it ended the sale efforts. In March, the company asked its financial adviser to explore the sale of its Leslie Fay Dress, Sportswear, Albert Nipon, Outlander and Castelberry apparel manufacturing and marketing businesses and its Leslie Fay group of 54 retail stores. Leslie Fay said it would file a bankruptcy reorganization plan by the end of July and would try to emerge from bankruptcy by the end of the year. Current shareholders' equity will probably become worthless in the reorganization, the company said.

SPRINT TO UNVEIL COAST-TO-COAST FIBER-OPTIC LINE

The Sprint Corporation., the nation's No. 3 long-distance carrier, said yesterday it would unveil by June 30 the first coast-to-coast fiber-optic line that guarantees voice, data, image and video service without interruption. The line, known as a synchronous optical network, will transmit communications at high speeds. If the cable is cut, Sprint said, its system will reroute signals within 60 milliseconds.

BIOCRYST STOCK FALLS ON REVISED DRUG-TEST RESULTS

Biocryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. Inc. shares fell 32 percent yesterday after the company said the results it announced in February for trials of its lead drug were inaccurate. A second analysis of the data found that the drug, BCX-34, did not work better than a placebo in treating the skin diseases psoriasis or cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Biocryst shares fell $4.125, to $8.75, in Nasdaq trading. BCX-34 is an enzyme inhibitor that Biocryst thinks can be used to treat a range of disorders caused by a proliferation of T-cells. T-cells, part of the body's defense system, are used to control infection and attack disease-causing bacteria; in some inflammatory diseases, however, the T-cells attack the body's own tissue.

Barclays May Soon Purchase Wells Fargo Nikko

Saudi Order for Boeing

The Boeing Company said it had finally received a long-awaited order from Saudia, the national airline of Saudi Arabie, for 23 of the company's 777 jetliners and five 747s. The total order is worth more than $4 billion. More than 18 months after the order was first announced, Saudia today signed the order on the 50th anniversary of the founding of the airlie. The order for Boeing, which is based here, calls for delivery beginning in 1997.
